What this is

WHERE THE ROSWELL REQUESTS IN THE CASE LOG COME FROM. The apparent volume of public interest visible in the 2001-2003 case log is substantially a school assignment repeated over years. A property of how the record was generated, not of its subject.

“Students from Woodland, California have been sending in similar letters since 1997. CIA has received nine so far this year. The record was in 2000 -- when we received 27 letters from Woodland students. The letters have the same elements -- Roswell, UFOs, Area 51, and most conclude with a request for a picture of George Tenet.”

“The FOIA case manager informed the student that CIA has ‘no information on the so-called Roswell incident,’ that after ‘a thorough and diligent search on behalf of a previous requester’ no records were found on Majestic 12, and that the CIA neither confirms nor denies the existence or non-existence of Area 51.”

THE SCRIPT, QUOTED INTERNALLY. The same three-part wording the agency sent outside over a signature. This is what makes the response letter a standard form rather than a determination.

Where no sheet is shown, the quote was still read off the page, rendered from the file we hold. A page image has not been prepared for the web for that page yet.
