Scandinavian Ghost Rockets (1946)

Unidentified objects reported over Sweden, Denmark, Norway and elsewhere in 1946. The Central Intelligence Group gave the window as "from the middle of July to October, 1946"; 13 July 1946 is the earliest specific sighting quoted in any document this project holds. The Director of Central Intelligence assessed them for President Truman as probably Soviet guided-missile tests launched from Peenemunde. Reported to the President on 23 August 1946.

Notes on this record

The date

The 13 July 1946 date comes from a Swedish Home Service broadcast quoted inside a CIG report. It is the date of a FOREIGN RADIO REPORT that this project holds, not a date the United States established.

The span

A FLAP, NOT A MOMENT, AND IT DOES NOT YET DRAW AS ONE. The only span the documents give is "from the middle of July to October, 1946". The start is the earliest sighting quoted with a date; the end is October with NO DAY STATED - 1946-10-01 stands for "October" and asserts nothing about a closing day, and may understate the window rather than overstate it. This should render as a band and today renders as a chip at its start year, because nothing on the front door draws bands yet. greenfireballs (1948-1951) has the identical problem and is typed the same way. Fixing the display is one job covering both; it is not a reason to type these two objects differently from each other.

The incident

The 1946 wave of unidentified aerial objects reported over Scandinavia, and the earliest incident on this map with a held US government document behind it.
