Hadley Cantril

Princeton psychologist, proposed to the CIA-convened Scientific Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects in January 1953 as the man to advise on the "educational program" the Panel recommended. The Panel's minutes name him for two things: he "authored 'Invasion from Mars', (a study in the psychology of panic, written about the famous Orson Welles radio broadcast in 1938)" and "has since performed advanced laboratory studies in the field of perception". HE IS ON THIS MAP FOR WHAT HE WAS ASKED TO DO, NOT FOR WHAT HE IS OTHERWISE KNOWN FOR. The programme he was proposed for had, in the Panel's own word, a "debunking" aim: it would "result in reduction in public interest in 'flying saucers' which today evokes a strong psychological reaction". Alongside him the Panel named Don Marquis of the University of Michigan and Leo Rosten as possible consultant psychologists, Arthur Godfrey as a broadcast channel, the Navy Office of Naval Research Special Devices Center at Sands Point, the Jam Handy Co. and Walt Disney, Inc.
