Project TWINKLE
A short-term photographic investigation of the "green fireballs" reported by numerous observers in Nevada and New Mexico, established in the summer of 1949 and managed by the USAF's Cambridge Research Laboratory. AARO records that "The literature is not clear if Project TWINKLE was officially supported by the original Project GRUDGE." The plan was to place multiple high-powered cameras near White Sands so that two simultaneous images would give a fireball's speed, altitude and time. Results, as the report gives them: "This project was only able to secure one camera, which was frequently moved between locations following fireball reports, and no photographs of the fireballs were ever taken."

ADOPTED FROM AARO, NOT ESTABLISHED HERE. AARO's 2024 historical report dates Project TWINKLE "Summer 1949-Summer 1950". This project holds the Twinkle final report and has verified it by hash, and that report has NOT been shown to state its own start date - 29 of its 34 pages are unread. The day within each season is a convention: 1 July at both ends, mid-season, chosen so the span is exactly the year the Robertson Panel describes. end_precision is "season".
NO END DATE ESTABLISHED, AND TWO US GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS DISAGREE. AARO's heading gives "Summer 1950". The Project Twinkle final report, which this project also holds, is dated NOVEMBER 1951 - more than a year later. That disagreement is a fact about the record and is not smoothed over by choosing one.
AARO's 2024 historical report gives "Summer 1949-Summer 1950". CORROBORATED ON LENGTH by a CIA document read by eye on 26 August 2026, in which the Robertson Panel calls it "the year-long Project TWINKLE program of 24-hour instrumentation watch (two frames of film showing nothing distinguishable)". NOT THE DATE ANYONE CLOSED IT: the project's own final report, dated November 1951, records at printed 7 that Col. Baynes at Holloman decided it "be maintained on a standby basis and without official Air Force status" - a decision more than a year AFTER this end date. end_kind is "reported" rather than "ended" because this is AARO's dating adopted to place the block, not a finding of this project.
