Savannah River AEC Plant sighting (1952)

Case 13 in a paper printed in the 1968 House Committee on Science and Astronautics symposium, printed page 51. John A. Anderson, in 1952 a young engineer at the Savannah River AEC facility near Aiken, South Carolina, was outside with what he estimated at perhaps a hundred other engineers, scientists and technicians for a required-attendance skit marking DuPont's 150th anniversary when some of them spotted "a greenish glowing object of no discernible shape" darting back and forth erratically at high speed. It was in view about two minutes; he stressed its "phenomenal maneuverability" and that it "repeatedly changed direction abruptly in sharp-angle manner", ending when it disappeared over the horizon "at apparently tremendous velocity". WHAT MAKES IT WORTH DRAWING IS THE SILENCE AFTER IT. "Despite searching local papers for some days thereafter, not a word of this sighting was published, and no further information or comment on it came from within the very security-conscious AEC plant. He was unaware of any official report." The author adds that Ruppelt, writing about the high concentration of reports in the Southeast around September 1952, noted that "many of the reports came from people in the vicinity of the then new super-hush-hush AEC facility at Savannah River, Georgia" - and that whether any of those came from Anderson's group is unknown.

Notes on this record

The date

The witness and the author "inferred" the date, "probably 7/19/52", from the DuPont anniversary skit the staff were outside watching. The paper says so; it is not a stamped date.

The incident

A daylight sighting over the Savannah River atomic plant, watched by an estimated hundred technical staff.
