Soviet committee on unusual phenomena
A committee described in a 1972 CIA information report as one "the USSR has established to investigate unusual phenomena, in other words, flying saucers". THE ONLY ACCOUNT OF IT THIS PROJECT HOLDS IS HOSTILE AND SECOND-HAND. A member gave a talk at the Yerevan Conference on the Origins of Life in September 1971 whose approach the reporting source paraphrased as "Well, of course, we know there isn't anything to this alleged phenomenon (flying saucers), but on the other hand----." I.S. Shklovskiy and other Soviet scientists present "joked and laughed and obviously did not take the speaker's remarks seriously", and Shklovskiy told a US attendee afterwards that the "flying saucer committee" consists of many politicians, theorists, historians and similar type people" and "has little if any scientific talent". No founding document, membership list, mandate or report of this committee is held here. It is on the map because a US intelligence report says it existed, and for no stronger reason than that.
