William Maurice 'Doc' Ewing (1906-1974), pioneering Columbia geophysicist and founder of the Lamont Geological Observatory. In fall 1945 he conceived the constant-level-balloon acoustic-surveillance concept behind Project Mogul - detecting Soviet nuclear tests via the upper-atmosphere sound channel - and pitched it to Gen. Carl Spaatz.
