Jeffrey Epstein

1987–2019

Financier and convicted sex offender who reinvented himself as a self-styled science philanthropist and became one of the largest private cultivators of elite scientists. Documented giving: $9M+ to Harvard (incl. $6.5M to Martin Nowak's Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, where he kept an office and visited 40+ times in 2018), MIT's Media Lab, the Santa Fe Institute, and John Brockman's Edge Foundation (its major funder, ~$638K); he hosted a 2006 Nobel-laureate gravity conference in the US Virgin Islands. His fortune's true source - patron Les Wexner gave him power of attorney - was never fully explained, and a recurring but unproven claim (amplified by prosecutor Alexander Acosta's reported remark that Epstein belonged to intelligence, and by the Maxwell family's alleged Mossad ties) is that he was an intelligence asset. On this map he anchors the who-funds-fringe-physics question; the sensitive-programs framing is inference, not fact. Died in federal custody, 2019.
