Scientist or researcher

James E. McDonald

1966-01-01year known, day not recorded
ends 1971-06-13died

Senior atmospheric physicist at the University of Arizona's Institute of Atmospheric Physics and the most scientifically credentialed UFO advocate of his era. The Office of Naval Research funded his UFO research in 1967; he worked from Project Blue Book files at Wright-Patterson and became the fiercest scientific critic of Edward Condon's committee, testifying to Congress in 1968 that "UFOs are entirely real and we do not know what they are." Found dead in the desert near Tucson on June 13, 1971 with a .38 revolver and an apparent suicide note; ruled suicide following an earlier attempt.

3 corrections to this record

Generated from the record, not written by hand. Every change keeps what the map used to say, because a correction nobody can see is indistinguishable from never having been wrong.

James E. McDonald → Project Blue Book
worked from its case files at Wright-Patterson
visited Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and examined its UFO files
Printed 19 says he visited and saw the files. It says Wright-Patterson, not Blue Book, and seeing is not working from.
James E. McDonald → Edward Condon
McDonald was the fiercest scientific critic of the Condon Report
his criticism of it was ruled out of scope at the 1968 symposium; he stated his views were on record elsewhere
Two faults removed at once. 'Fiercest' is a ranking the charter forbids and no document supports, the same fault stripped from link 1240 earlier today. And the citation itself said the hearing was NOT evidence of the critique. What the hearing DOES prove, on printed 30, is better: Rep. Ryan asked McDonald to evaluate the Colorado project, Roush ruled it out of scope by prior agreement, Miller said the committee had no authority, and McDonald said 'I am on record elsewhere than here in my specific views on that project.' Every word of the new claim is on that page. Operator decision, 2026-08-21.
James E. McDonald → House Symposium on UFOs (1968)
testified; the most forceful case for serious study
testified; his testimony and prepared paper occupy printed pp. 18-85 of the record
"Most forceful" is a ranking the document does not make and the charter forbids. Replaced with the page span, which the contents page gives directly. NOT called "the longest" - see the note on this bind.

Notes on this record

The end date, and how it was established

Verified 26 August 2026 against Wikipedia, "James E. McDonald", fetched 26 August 2026. "McDonald was found dead with a head wound in a desert area of Tucson, Arizona, with a .38 caliber revolver and apparent suicide note found nearby." RECORDED GRADE: this is a fetched secondary source, not a primary document read by eye, and it sits at or below the bottom of this project's provenance ladder. It is recorded because the alternatives were our own unsourced role prose and an operator-supplied date with no source at all. The date was independently supplied by the operator before this check and matched.
