Department of Energy nuclear-weapons laboratory in California, co-founded by Edward Teller in 1952 as a rival to Los Alamos. Home of the SDI X-ray-laser (Star Wars) effort led by Teller and Lowell Wood, and a pillar of the U.S. weapons-physics establishment alongside Los Alamos and Sandia.
