Von Neumann Probe (UAP hypothesis)

1948-01-01year known, day not recorded

A self-replicating interstellar spacecraft - derived from von Neumann's theory of self-reproducing automata - able to explore or colonize a galaxy without further input from its makers. In UAP discourse it is a leading serious hypothesis: that unidentified objects could be autonomous, possibly ancient alien machines rather than piloted craft.
