Robert Monroe

1971–1995

Businessman (radio and cable television) who began having spontaneous out-of-body experiences and wrote about them in the bestselling 1971 book "Journeys Out of the Body." Founded a private lab near Charlottesville, VA to study the phenomenon, which grew into The Monroe Institute; developed the "Hemi-Sync" binaural-beat technology with physicist Tom Campbell and engineer Dennis Mennerich. Army intelligence, and later the CIA, took a formal interest in the Institute's techniques, culminating in a declassified 1983 report on its "Gateway Process."
