Gen. John A. Samford

1952

USAF Director of Intelligence who, alongside Roger Ramey, held the July 29, 1952 Pentagon press conference addressing the Washington, D.C. UFO wave - the largest press conference since WWII. Attributed the sightings to temperature inversions while acknowledging "a certain percentage" of reports came from "credible observers of relatively incredible things." In 1955, a CIA memo suggested he be asked to brief the Intelligence Advisory Committee on the classified Avro Canada "Project Y" saucer-aircraft program.
