Edward "Pete" Aldridge Jr.

1981-01-01year known, day not recorded

A textbook black-space revolving-door figure. Aeronautical engineer (Texas A&M, 1960) who served as Under Secretary of the Air Force (1981-86) and concurrently Director of the National Reconnaissance Office (1981-88), running America's spy-satellite enterprise and initiating Titan IV procurement from Martin Marietta - a move that preserved military space access after the 1986 Challenger disaster. Became the 16th Secretary of the Air Force (1986-88), the era in which the mysterious "Aurora" black-budget line item surfaced. Later president of McDonnell Douglas Electronic Systems, CEO of The Aerospace Corporation (the FFRDC that provides technical oversight of national-security space and the NRO), then Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition (2001-03) - the Pentagon's top weapons buyer, who pushed the F-35 into production before testing finished. Chaired the 2004 "Aldridge Commission" on the Moon/Mars Vision for Space Exploration; joined Lockheed Martin's board in 2003.
